Shane MacSweeney

Mr Shane MacSweeney is a Consultant Vascular Surgeon and Honorary Clinical Associate Professor at Queens Medical Centre in Nottingham. Skilled in the latest minimally-invasive surgical techniques, he provides private treatment for vascular problems such as varicose veins, abdominal aortic aneurysm and stroke prevention at three leading independent hospitals in the Nottingham area.

Training and experience

Mr MacSweeney qualified from Cambridge University in 1984 and trained as a Vascular Surgeon, initially in London and then in Australia with Michael Lawrence Brown, a pioneer of endovascular aneurysm surgery. Mr MacSweeney performed the first operations in the UK using this method in 1996, and the Zenith endovascular stent graft is now established as one of the leading methods for keyhole repair of aortic aneurysms worldwide.

Mr MacSweeney has been a Consultant Vascular Surgeon at Queens Medical Centre in Nottingham since 1995. He performed the city’s first minimally invasive VNUS catheter ablation operation for varicose veins, as well as introducing carotid surgery under local anaesthetic. He has also been a trainer for endoscopic thoracic sympathectomy, a surgical procedure to treat facial blushing and excessive sweating of the hands.

With a Masters degree in Clinical Education, and a former Vascular Tutor for the Royal College of Surgeons and the Vascular Society, Mr MacSweeney remains actively involved in teaching vascular surgeons both nationally and internationally. Mr MacSweeney was appointed an Honorary Clinical Associate Professor by the University of Nottingham in recognition of his contribution to research.

Clinical interests

Mr MacSweeney has a particular interest in minimally invasive vascular surgery, including VNUS catheter ablation and laser treatment (EVLT) for varicose veins and EVAR, a keyhole technique to repair abdominal aortic aneurysms. He also provides an operation to open up a narrow carotid artery (carotid endarterectomy) under local anaesthetic, resulting in less time spent in hospital and a quicker recovery.

Other procedures offered by Mr MacSweeney include angioplasty and stenting of the leg arteries and bypass surgery of the leg arteries to treat claudication (leg pain) caused by poor blood supply.

Research interests

Mr MacSweeny’s research interests include keyhole surgery for abdominal aortic aneurysm and stroke prevention.
