Sanat Shah

Mr Sanat Shah is a consultant orthopaedic and trauma surgeon specialising in lower limb problems. His subspecialty is hip and knee replacement including revision and knee arthroscopy.

Trained in trauma and orthopaedic surgery in Manchester and Southampton, and with further subspecialist training in lower limb replacement surgery, Mr Shah has been a consultant orthopaedic surgeon at Manchester Royal Infirmary since 2003. He is highly experienced in both trauma surgery and elective procedures, and is an undergraduate and postgraduate tutor at Manchester University.

Knee arthroscopy

Mr Shah is skilled in the diagnosis and treatment of knee conditions using arthroscopy, a type of keyhole surgery. Performed under general anaesthetic as an outpatient procedure, a small flexible fibre optic tube (arthroscope) is inserted into the knee, sending back images to a video monitor. This allows Mr Shah to examine the bones, ligaments, cartilage and tendons and determine the cause of any knee pain, or assess the level of damage in an injury. The progression of arthritis can also be monitored.

By inserting tiny surgical instruments through the arthroscope, Mr Shah is also able to carry out a number of knee treatments, including repair to damaged ligaments, tendons and cartilage, drainage of any built-up fluid, and removal of loose sections of bone and cartilage.

Clinical interests

Mr Shah has special interest in treating young patients with hip and knee arthritis, as well as those with sports injuries. He performs both cemented and uncemented hip replacements. He also uses various hip replacements with different articulations (metal on poly, metal on metal and ceramic on ceramic).

Developments in materials and manufacturing techniques have led to artificial knees that are longer lasting, and the advice for patients to take up lower impact forms of sport such as cycling, swimming and walking has resulted in knee replacements that are still working well after 18 years. Mr Shah offers both total knee replacement and partial knee replacement, a less invasive operation which is suitable for people with arthritis localised in just one part of the knee.

Research interests

Mr Shah is actively involved in teaching of undergraduate as well as postgraduate students at Manchester University. He also regularly teaches on AO trauma courses.
