Rakesh Patalay

Dr Rakesh Patalay is a Consultant Dermatologist and Dermatological Surgeon at Guy’s and St Thomas’ Hospital in London. He has particular expertise in skin cancer diagnosis and management, Mohs micrographic surgery, lasers and skin imaging and cosmetic dermatology.

Training and Experience

He acquired his MBBS from University College London Medical School, BSc in Neuroscience from UCL, PhD in optics and skin imaging from Imperial College London and his Mohs and cutaneous lasers fellowship at St John’s Institute of Dermatology. An overseas internship was awarded in applied biophotonics and laser dermatology at the prestigious Beckman Laser Institute, University of California Irvine, USA.

He is currently the clinical lead for the cancer screening service at the Guy’s Hospital, London and clinical lead for an internationally recognised diploma in Dermatology. He teaches dermatology both in the UK and abroad.
At Guy’s Hospital, he is part of the largest dermatology surgery & Mohs surgery service in the Southeast, the regional laser service and the first skin imaging service for the NHS.

Furthermore, his experience in general, surgical and laser dermatology both in the NHS and privately places him amongst a select few practicing cosmetic dermatology with this breadth of expertise.

A top consultant and surgeon in his field, Dr Patalay’s special interests are:

  • Skin cancer (diagnosis and treatment, including moles)
  • Skin surgery (including Mohs micrographic surgery)
  • Skin imaging (Reflectance Confocal Microscopy)
  • Cosmetic dermatology (including botox, fillers and lasers)
  • Laser treatment
  • Acne and acne scarring

Research interests

Dr Patalay is active academically in in the field of non-invasive skin imaging. He led the NICE review and co-authored the Cochrane reviews for the use of reflectance confocal microscopy in skin cancer.

He has been a committee member and surgical advisor for UKDCTN (UK Dermatology clinical trials network) since 2016. Boasting an extensive list of peer-reviewed journal articles, Dr Patalay has also been featured in a range of conference proceedings and published abstracts in the fields of biophotonics and dermatology.
