Charles Claoue

Professor Charles Claoué is a Consultant Ophthalmic Surgeon at The Harley Street Diagnostic Eye Centre at 22A. He also offers a range of services to private patients in London and Essex.

Following medical and surgical training at the University of Cambridge where he was a Churchill Scholar, Professor Claoué's ophthalmic training began at Southampton Eye Hospital and continued as a Wellcome Trust Research Fellow at the University of Bristol and Bristol Eye Hospital. He then trained at St Thomas' Hospital, London and Moorfields Eye Hospital where he undertook fellowships in Anterior Segment and Corneal disease and Ophthalmic Primary Care. 

During his training Professor Claoué was awarded the Hamilton Bailey Prize of the International College of Surgeons. He is an Honorary Consultant Ophthalmic Surgeon at the Academic University of Pretoria, Republic of South Africa, and Honorary Clinical Lecturer in Ophthalmology at the University of London, as well as a consultant to Rayner Intraocular Lenses Limited, the only British intraocular lens manufacturer and the company who made the first IOL.

Treatments

Professor Claoué offers private out-patient consultations, diagnosis, advice and treatment for patients with ophthalmic problems. Home visits, day-case and in-patient ophthalmic surgery are also available.

As a Bond Solon and Professional Solutions trained medical expert in ophthalmology and a Member of the Academy of Experts, Professor Claoué also provides second opinions and medico-legal work.

Clinical interests

Professor Claoué's special interests include advanced cataract surgery (including no-needle, no-stitch, no-pad surgery and multifocal IOLs), corneal disease and complex corneal surgery, external eye disease and surgery, dry eye and blepharitis, excimer laser surgery for refractive errors (LASIK) and refractive lens exchange, particularly for presbyopia (PRELEX).

Research interests

Professor Claoué works at the forefront of cataract surgery and laser vision correction. He is regularly invited to lecture abroad on advanced aspects of cataract and refractive surgery including ophthalmic anaesthesia. To date, he has lectured in over 50 countries and received many prestigious awards.
