Leading UK corrective eye clinic Advanced Vision Care (AVC) has created a UK first with its transparent glass laser theatre. At the renowned Harley Street clinic, the AVC surgical and clinical team now performs bespoke laser eye surgery in a clear glass theatre, enabling a patient’s friend or family member to watch the surgery live, as it happens.
The surgeon’s microscope is linked to a screen in the adjacent room, permitting the patient’s companion a unique, unprecedented insight into the laser surgical procedure. They see everything that the surgeon sees and witness each step of the procedure as it takes place.
Making the decision to have corrective laser eye surgery can be the first move towards new found freedom for people who wear glasses or contact lenses. However this important event can lead some patients to feel slightly apprehensive about the procedure. As the laser operating room is a sterile area, other people cannot be allowed inside. Moreover, the lasers need to be kept at a particular temperature and humidity for the best results; increasing the number of people in the room would increase both factors to an unacceptable level.
By offering the unique, transparent glass theatre AVC believes it brings: comfort to the patient due to the familiar close presence of a companion during surgery; reassurance of the ability of the surgeon and team to perform consistently and successfully to the highest standard; and an unprecedented opportunity for the patient to share a life-changing moment with someone dear to them.
AVC’s medical director, Mr CT Pillai, is one of the country’s most experienced consultant refractive surgeons and the clinic’s founding surgeon. He personally implements all laser surgical procedures at AVC.
“AVC is all about providing excellent, unsurpassed patient care,” said Mr Pillai. “That means pre, during and post surgery. We take every measure possible to make our patients feel as relaxed as possible and this is one more means of doing just that.”
