This report provides insight into the NHS private patient market – that is services delivered to private patients within an NHS owned facility.
This is the first report into the NHS private patient market that not only seeks to provide analysis of the market, its drivers and future potential, but also compares pricing for common elective procedures.
Within the context of recent growth within the private healthcare market, driven predominantly by the self-pay market as highlighted in our 2013 and 2015 Self-pay Market Reports, we examine whether this growth has reached the NHS private patient market and if so, the factors that can sustain it in the future.
We talked to those managing private patient units within the NHS; those responsible at a Board or executive level; clinicians and private medical insurers to gain a rounded view of market strengths, weaknesses and future opportunities.
We also carried out an online survey to gauge wider views using our database of NHS private patient managers, clinicians and business managers.
Whilst there is optimism about future opportunities, there is concern that at a local level, the NHS isn’t able to effect change at a pace sufficient to capitalise on these opportunities.
