Why is health insurance so difficult to understand?
The Private Patients’ Forum (PPF)
The Private Patients’ Forum (PPF) is an impartial organisation that aims to represent the interests of patients using the UK independent private healthcare sector.
The PPF is a non-profit making company governed by a Council that includes people with a special interest in Private Healthcare who are prepared to give their time on behalf of private patients. The Council also actively recruits people with direct experience as patients in the private healthcare system.
The main objective of the PPF is to help private patients to make informed choices and access the highest standards of healthcare. They provide information on matters such as how to choose the most suitable specialist and hospital according to individual clinical need, how to find the best private medical insurance (PMI) policy and how to go about solving a dispute with a consultant, insurer or healthcare provider.
The role of the PPF is strictly an advisory one, aimed at empowering patients to make their own choices. They cannot negotiate on behalf of a patient in a dispute or give opinions about medical treatment, doctors and hospitals.
By providing an online discussion forum, the PPF also provides a platform for patients to share their experiences and opinions. This information can then be used to help other patients in similar situations. Whilst the PPF cannot become directly involved in any individual dispute, where a major issue arises or is repeated, their Steering Group may be able to act on information received in a general sense.
The funding of the PPF is open and transparent. They receive funding from a range of interest groups in the private healthcare industry, including ‘no strings’ financial support from a collaboration of three major hospital groups: HCA International, Spire Healthcare and BMI Healthcare. Talks are also underway with other professional organisations across the sector with a view to broadening the PPF’s funding base.
All donations made to the PPF are gratefully received on the clear understanding that no influence or control will be gained by making a contribution. This makes them a resolutely independent “voice for private patients”.
