Ulcerative colitis is inflammation of the colon and the rectum. The cause is an autoimmune destruction of the healthy tissues by the body’s defense mechanism. The signs and symptoms are recurrent bloody diarrhoea, abdominal pain and a frequent urge to defecate and a colonoscopy or x-ray can be used to confirm the diagnosis. Treatment for this bowel condition is done with aminosalicylates and corticosteroids. Surgical procedures e.g. Ileostomy has to be performed by a gastroenterologist if medication is not effective.
