Trypanosomiasis is also known as sleeping sickness. It is caused by a parasite trypanosoma brucei. Its 2 major types are African trypanosomiasis (sleeping sickness) and American trypanosomiasis (chaga’s disease). It is transmitted to humans by the bite of the tsetse fly. Common symptoms are trypanosomal chancre, enlarged lymph nodes, fever, encephalopathy if it crosses the blood brain barrier, and unconsciousness at the terminal stage. Treatment depends on the stage of the disease.
