Skilled assessment of thyroid problems

Underactive thyroid

Patients with an underactive thyroid may experience the following symptoms:

  • Tiredness
  • Weight gain
  • Depression
  • Sensitivity to cold
  • Dry hair and skin
  • Muscle aches

Underactive thyroid problems are caused by the gland not producing enough of the hormone, thyroxine.  This can be confirmed using a detailed history, examination, blood tests and radionuclide scans.  Once a diagnosis has been made, appropriate medication can be prescribed and monitored.

Overactive thyroid

An overactive thyroid may have many symptoms, although few patients will experience all of them at the same time.  These include:

  • Hyperactivity
  • Mood swings
  • Insomnia
  • Fatigue
  • Diarrhoea and fatty stools
  • Excess sweating
  • Unexplained weight loss
  • Goitre (swelling in the neck)
  • Fast heart rate
  • Trembling

For reasons that are not always fully understood, the thyroid can start to produce excess thyroxine.  The consultants at the London Thyroid clinic are experts in the assessment and diagnosis of an overactive thyroid using blood tests, radionuclide scans and ultrasound.  If a goitre or lump is present, this is investigated using aspiration cytology.  Once diagnosis has been established, an individualised treatment plan can be drawn up by a consultant endocrinologist.

Thyroid cancer

The main symptom of thyroid cancer is a usually painless lump below the Adam's apple.  This should always be assessed by a doctor, although it is important to note that only one in twenty of this type of lump is due to thyroid cancer, most are non-cancerous swellings known as goitres.

All throat lumps and swellings will undergo detailed investigation at The London Thyroid Clinic. If thyroid cancer should be diagnosed, the specialist team of surgeons, radiologists and oncologists are highly skilled in developing the optimum treatment plan to suit the individual patient.

How can I access private treatment at this facility?

The consultants at the London Thyroid Clinic most usually see insured patients who have been referred by their GP or specialist.  However, they welcome patients who would like to self refer and those who are sponsored by a third party.

The team are also expert in the treatment of paediatric and adult ENT diseases with specialist interest in salivary gland, voice, snoring and sinus surgery.
