Indications of the need for slipped or herniated disc surgery are severe nerve compression, pain and an inability to stand or walk and after conservative treatments with ani-inflamatory medications have failed. A slipped disc can be detected by carrying out an MRI scan or an X-ray. The removal of the slipped disc is known as a discectomy. An incision is made over the spine and the herniated part, or sometimes the entire disc, is removed depending on the condition. The surgery can be performed either with open surgery or via keyhole surgery by an orthopaedic or spinal surgeon. Possible complications include infection, nerve injury and paralysis. Alternative treatments include osteopathy, chiropractic or actupuncture sessions along with a facet joint injection.
