Floaters and flashes or posterior vitreous detachment is the presence of flashes of light or floating images that block vision (two may also occur at the same time). This is caused by a collapse of vitreous gel. However, there may also be a more serious underlying cause for this complaint, which is called detachment of the retina. Suspect retinal detachment when there is a new onset of floaters and flashes, painless loss of vision and distorted vision.
