An abdominal hysterectomy is the removal of the uterus through a cut in your lower abdomen by a gynaecologist. A hysterectomy may be required due to abnormal uterine bleeding, fibroids or ovarian cancer. An ultrasound or examination by camera of the fallopian tubes or uterus are used to investigate the condition before the surgery takes place. The operation may include removal of the cervix; this is called a total abdominal hysterectomy or TAH. Sometimes the cervix is not removed, and this is then called a sub-total abdominal hysterectomy. Because this open surgery, recovery will take longer than from a vaginal hysterectomy, although full recovery is achieved within about 6 weeks.
