Familial polyposis coli is a genetic condition wherein the patient develops polyps in the colon even as young as 10 years of age. By the time the patient is in his early twenties, the number of polyps could be as high as a hundred. Colon cancer may result in severe cases of familiar polyposis coli. Symptoms include bleeding from the rectum, anaemia, pain in the abdominal area, weight loss and diarrhoea. Treatment includes screening and surgical removal of polyps by a colorectal surgeon or gastroenterologist.
