Cholecystitis refers to inflammation (‘-itis’) of the gall bladder (‘cholecyst’). The gall bladder is a pouch situated under the liver. The latter produces a mixture of chemicals which is sent to the gallbladder for temporary storage. When a person eats, the gallbladder transports this chemical into the gut where it helps digest fat present in food. Cholecystitis occurs most commonly due to the presence of stones in the gall bladder. There is pain in the upper part of the stomach on the right side, vomiting and fever. Sometimes there is pain over the right shoulder as well. Usually the gall bladder is removed since the problem can occur again. A person without a gall bladder does not have any problem.
