In addition to all the features of standard travel insurance, Medical Travel Shield Elective provides additional tailored benefits that cover:

  • Travel and accommodation expenses over and above the normal recovery period
  • Medical expenses incurred if you have a life threatening complication during surgery that occurs during the planned treatment and is secondary to the pre-agreed treatment plan prior to departure
  • Additional return trip (economy return travel, accommodation and living expenses) within 12 months of the original treatment if your original treatment is medically assessed as unsuccessful and it is medically necessary to return to the same hospital/clinic within 12 months for corrective treatment. Cover extends to include one companion.
  • Elective procedures covered can include:
    - Bariatric/gastric procedures, including gastric band, gastric balloon and gastric bypass
    - Orthopaedic procedures, including total joint replacements
    - Cataract procedures

Important areas covered with limits shown

  • Cancellation: £5000
  • Medical and additional expenses including repatriation: £2 million (does not cover medical expenses incurred in relation to your treatment except if you have a life threatening complication during surgery that occurs during the planned treatment and is secondary to the pre-agreed treatment plan prior to departure)
  • Property and money: £1000 limited to £250 for money; £300 for any one article or pair or set of articles
  • Personal liability: £1 million

Not covered

  • Cost of the planned elective procedure
  • Medical expenses or legal costs incurred in relation to your treatment except if you have a life threatening complication that occurs during the planned treatment
  • Pre-existing medical conditions unless agreed by the underwriters
  • Any trip contrary to medical advice
  • Treatment that is not carried out in a properly regulated hospital/clinic or surgery
  • Treatment in the USA, Mexico, the Caribbean and countries defined as Hazardous Territories
