Using ultrasound to assist with location, a catheter is inserted into a major vein via a pinhole sized entry point in the skin which is then positioned into the pelvic vein needed to be treated, with the help of X-ray. A small metal coil is inserted through the catheter where it sits in the vein causing it to clot and essentially shut down.
