Mr Amit Kumar is a Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon at Manchester University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust specialising in hip surgery, knee surgery and musculoskeletal oncology. He provides private treatment for hip and knee conditions, as well as rapid assessment of possible soft tissue and bone tumours, at leading independent hospitals in Manchester and the surrounding area.
Mr Kumar qualified at the Royal Free and University College London Medical School in London in 2003. Following his early surgical training in the North-West of England, he undertook his specialist post-graduate training in Trauma & Orthopaedics on the East Midlands (South) rotation.
Mr Kumar completed his training with fellowships in lower limb arthroplasty and sarcoma at Leicester, Nottingham and Wrightington Hospitals, taking up his first consultant position in 2016. Currently a Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon at Manchester University Hospitals Trust, he is also the Clinical Director of the Sarcoma Pathway Board for Greater Manchester Cancer.
In addition to his clinical responsibilities, Mr Kumar plays an active role in teaching at the University of Manchester and is involved in training other surgeons.
Mr Kumar provides assessment and treatment for a wide range of hip conditions including osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, hip dysplasia, fracture of the neck of the femur, Perthes disease and avascular necrosis. He is highly experienced in total hip replacement and offers pain-relieving injections for arthritic joint pain and trochanteric bursitis.
Skilled in the latest techniques in knee replacement surgery, Mr Kumar offers total knee replacement, partial knee replacement and computer guided patient specific knee replacement. He also provides keyhole investigation and treatment of conditions affecting the cartilage and meniscus in the knee, as well as steroid and viscosupplementation knee injections.
To meet the needs of patients who require rapid consultation and investigation of knee problems, Mr Kumar offers a One Stop Knee Clinic for private and self pay patients at BMI The Alexandra Hospital in Cheadle and Nuffield Health Manchester Diagnostic Suite in Manchester city centre.
With a specialist interest and expertise in soft tissue sarcoma, bone tumours and metastatic bone disease, Mr Kumar provides expert assessment of symptoms such as lumps and unexplained limb or joint pain affecting any region of the body as part of a multidisciplinary Rapid Access Tumour Clinic. The service includes prompt consultation, with same day investigations and in some cases biopsies, and onward management plan.
Mr Kumar offers investigation and treatment for hand conditions such as carpal tunnel syndrome, Dupuytren’s contracture, ganglion cyst, trigger finger, base of thumb/CMC arthritis, cubital tunnel nerve entrapment and DeQuervain’s tenosynovitis.
Mr Kumar provides injections to relieve pain in the hip, knee, shoulder and small joints, as well as visco-supplementation injections to treat early arthritis in the knee.
Mr Kumar has a research interest in arthroplasty and sarcoma.
