Nihal Shah: Consultant Oncologist in London
Dr Nihal Shah is an experienced clinical oncologist based at Harley Street with a special interest in the management of breast cancer, head and neck cancers, lung cancer and cancers of unknown primary using the latest techniques in chemotherapy and radiotherapy, including CyberKnife.
Experience
Dr Shah is Assistant Clinical Director of the Mount Vernon Cancer Centre, an internationally-recognised centre for innovation and excellence in clinical cancer research and care. He has a particular interest and expertise in the management of breast cancer, head and neck cancers and lung cancer, and is experienced in the treatment of cancers of unknown primary (CUP). A specialist in CyberKnife, Mr Shah is featured in the Tatler Doctors Guide 2013.
Cancers of unknown primary (CUP)
It is important for doctors to identify the origin of a secondary cancer in order to plan the most effective treatment. In around 3-5% of people with cancer, however, the primary cancer cannot be found and the cancer is then referred to as a cancer of unknown primary (CUP). Reasons for CUP may be that the primary cancer has disappeared even though it has spread to other parts of the body, the secondary cancer has grown and spread very quickly although the primary is still very small, or the cancer has been growing in several areas of the body for some time making it difficult to pinpoint the origin.
Dr Shah is able to offer specialist advice on CUP based on a number of factors, including the location of the secondary cancer, the symptoms, test results and his extensive experience in such cases.
Clinical Interests
Dr Shah is skilled in the use of CyberKnife, a cutting edge radiotherapy machine that delivers targeted high doses of radiation to a tumour without damaging the surrounding tissues. At the moment is most commonly used for small tumours in the brain and spine, including secondary tumours, but work is ongoing into its use for early stage lung cancers and liver cancer.
Research interests
Dr Shah is active in clinical trial participation, is an investigator for a number for local cancer studies and is an advisor to pharmaceutical companies on relevant cancer strategies. He is an advisor to the Health Care Commission and the cancer strategy for head and neck tumours. Dr Shah has advised BACUP, dedicated websites for cancer information and ethnic minority groups for cancer care information.
