Majid Hashemi: Consultant Bariatric and Gastrointestinal Surgeon in London
Mr Majid Hashemi is a highly experienced Harley Street-based obesity surgeon offering a range of weight loss procedures including laparoscopic gastric bypass, gastric banding and sleeve gastrectomy. With a specialist expertise in upper GI surgery, he also offers expert treatment for conditions such as gastro-oesophageal reflux, hiatus hernia, abdominal hernias, achalasia and gallstones.

Training and experience
Mr Majid was appointed as Senior Lecturer at University College London and Consultant Surgeon at the Whittington Hospital in 2001. During this time he established and led the bariatric surgery service in North London and developed an innovative multidisciplinary team (MDT) approach, helping patients to make treatment decisions based on input from specialists from a range of related disciplines.
Since 2007, Mr Majid has been Lead for Oesophageal and Gastric Surgery and Oesophageal and Gastric Cancer at University College Hospital, where, in addition to surgery for obesity and oesophageal reflux or motility problems, he performs major oesophageal and gastric resections as part of UCLH’s Cancer Centre team.
Clinical interests
To date, Mr Majid has performed over 3,000 operations on the stomach and oesophagus. His clinical interests include laparoscopic (keyhole) bariatric surgery the assessment and treatment of patients with oesophageal reflux or motility problems including those that require revision surgery.
Combining the latest scientific evidence with his own extensive experience, Mr Majid is committed to providing his patients with informed and personalised care, fully involving them in the decision-making process to find the best treatment solution in each individual case.
Bariatric surgery
Bariatric packages include post-op follow-up appointments with Mr Hashemi for the first 6 months after surgery.
Some patients who have had bariatric surgery suffer from troublesome reflux. Previously the remedy for this was long term acid suppressants and medical treatment and, in cases that weren't improving, revision bariatric surgery.
Since 2017, Mr Hashemi has been pioneering a new technique in which he places a ring a magnetic beads around the lower oesophagus and this corrects the reflux. He was the first in the UK to perform this procedure and patients have had excellent results to date. The procedure takes less than an hour and does not involve any cutting or suturing of the stomach or bowel.

Research interests
Mr Majid plays an active role in training, education and research. He was Surgical Tutor and Academic Lead for Surgery at the Whittington and Archway Campus from 2001-2007 and Chair of the Surgery Module Management Group for undergraduate studies for University College London Medical School from 2007-2010.
Mr Majid has taken part in advanced laparoscopic training workshops in the UK and abroad, performing both laparoscopic and bariatric procedures, and has played lead and supervisory roles in research projects that have resulted in publications in scientific journals.
