Dr Sarmed Sami is a Consultant Gastroenterologist at University College London Hospitals NHS Trust (UCLH) and an Honorary Associate Professor of Gastroenterology at University College London (UCL). He also consults privately at The London Gastroenterology Centre, 41 Welbeck Street.

Training and experience
Dr Sami graduated from Baghdad University College of Medicine in Iraq in 2003. He then trained in Internal Medicine and Gastroenterology at centres of excellence in both the UK and the USA, including the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota, USA. During his training, Dr Sami completed a prestigious National Endoscopy Research Fellowship at the NIHR Nottingham Biomedical Research Centre, which led to the award of a PhD on the evaluation of minimally invasive screening tools for Barrett’s oesophagus and oesophageal varices.
Dr Sami received the Post Graduate Certificate in Medical Education (PGCME) from the University of York in 2011 and has undertaken a variety of teaching roles, both at undergraduate and postgraduate level, as well as serving as a permanent and invited faculty member and speaker on a number of national and international courses and workshops. He is currently course director of the UCL Upper GI Symposium (UGIS) and faculty member of the Bi-annual Therapeutic Endoscopy Course for Nurse Assistants and Nurse Consultants (TECNA).
During his training and career, Dr Sami has been the proud recipient of several awards, including the Cook Medical Marsha Dreyer Award from the American Society for GI Endoscopy (ASGE), the British Society of Gastroenterology (BSG) Trainees Out of Programme Award and the Fellows-in-Training Award from the American College of Gastroenterology (ACG).

Dr Sami is the lead author and co-author of over 40 high impact peer-reviewed publications and research abstracts in the field of gastroenterology, including the current UK guidelines on oesophageal dilatation. His areas of research include heartburn and acid reflux, endoscopic therapy for Barrett’s oesophagus, minimally invasive screening tools for Barrett’s oesophagus and oesophageal cancer, transnasal endoscopy and minimally invasive imaging techniques.
