An Epidural is an injection given into epidural space, just outside the membrane which covers the spinal cord and the spinal fluid. It is often used in place of a general anesthetic if the latter is unsuitable or too risky for the patient for medical reasons. An epidural numbs areas of the chest, pelvis, legs and abdomen, but the patient remains conscious throughout surgery. Medication is delivered via the small tube inserted into your epidural space and can be left in place if pain management is required after surgery. This type of anesthesia can only be carried out by a highly qualified Anesthetist trained in pain management via epidural. It can be used for knee surgery.
