Miss Fiona MacNeill qualified from St Bartholomew's Hospital, London in 1983, obtained her MD thesis from the University of London in 1994 and has been a specialist consultant breast surgeon since 1996. Her main interest is oncoplastic and breast reconstruction surgery – achieving the best outcomes in cancer surgery and breast appearance.
She collaborates closely with her oncology colleagues to use the latest drugs and treatments to preserve the breast and the axilla (armpit) with less radical surgery. Working alongside plastic surgeons as the oncoplastic team she is able to offer a wide range of breast reconstruction surgery to maintain the breast shape and body image after breast cancer surgery.
As well as working as a breast surgeon, Miss MacNeill is now National Clinical Lead for a major standard setting and quality improvement programme in breast surgery (GIRFT) at NHS improvement in the Department of Health.
Miss MacNeill is actively engaged in local and national research trials and lectures nationally and internationally on oncoplastic surgery, breast surgery training and the changing role of breast surgery in the treatment of breast cancer and importance of multidisciplinary working and treatment planning in the delivery of modern breast cancer care. She acts in an advisory capacity to a number of charities and Department of Health committees.
