Varicose vein
Enlarged and swollen veins are a blood vessel condition known as varicose veins. The most common site of varicose veins are the lower limbs. The cause of varicose veins is the improper functioning of small valves in the veins. These valves are unable to prevent the backflow of the blood leading to varicose veins. Common symptoms are dark purple colored veins, feeling of heaviness in the legs and swollen feet. Risk factors are obesity and pregnancy. Treatment is done by a vascular surgeon only in the case of severe pain and discomfort. Common treatment options are endothermal ablation and compression stockings but surgery can be performed if these treatments are unsucessful.
