A bacterium called Salmonella typhi is the cause of typhoid fever. It affects only humans. It is usually spread through consumption of contaminated food and drink handled by contaminated people, who have shed the organism usually from faces contaminated sewage. It is a highly contagious disease. Common symptoms are high grade fever, rash, malaise, muscle pain and loss of appetite.
