Thyroiditis
Inflammation of the thyroid gland is known as thyroiditis. It is associated with abnormally high or low levels of thyroid hormones. Hashimoto’s thyroiditis is the most common type. Other types include acute thyroiditis, subacute thyroiditis, post-partum thyroiditis, silent thyroiditis, drug-induced thyroiditis and radiation-induced thyroiditis. Leading cause is the autoimmune destruction of the thyroid gland. Other causes include viral or bacterial infections, drugs and radiations. Symptoms are those of hypothyroidism or hyperthyroidism. Treatment depends on the type. Hashimoto’s thyroiditis is treated with immediate hormone replacement.
