Treatment of stomach cancer

The management of stomach cancer may include surgery, chemotherapy or radiotherapy, depending upon the stage and spread of the cancer. In most cases, when the cancer has not spread beyond the stomach, the primary treatment modality is a surgical resection of the cancerous tissue followed by radiotherapy or chemotherapy. In instances of any spread of the cancer to other organs, all three treatment modalities may be considered. The prognosis of stomach cancer is not very good since it is usually detected in the advanced stages, and when the cancer has already spread to other organs. A long-term follow-up with abdominal CT scans or gastrointestinal endoscopy is required to monitor any recurrence of this cancer.
