The surgical removal of spleen is known as splenectomy. Indications for removal are a damaged or diseased spleen, a tumor in the spleen and a hyperactive spleen. The two main types of spleenectomy are: open splenectomy and keyhole splenectomy. Keyhole surgery is more common. Small incisions are made through which the damaged spleen is removed. The incision is then closed with dissolvable sutures. Possible risks are infection and bleeding.
