Postpartum thyroiditis is a condition wherein there is swelling of the thyroid gland following giving birth, which is caused by very low or high levels of thyroid hormones. The immune system attacks the thyroid gland making it inflamed and leaking hormones into the blood. Symptoms of this condition are anxiety, insomnia, palpitations, weight loss and irritability during the initial months after delivery and after about 4 to 8 months, symptoms of fatigue weight gain, dry skin and depression are evident.
