Pneumococcal disease is a group of infections that are due to Streptococcus pneumoniae. This causes invasive to non-invasive pneumococcal disease. There are numerous strains of the bacteria and most enter the body through the nose and the mouth. Non-invasive infections are bronchitis, otitis media and sinusitis while invasive types cause pneumonia, bacteraemia, septicaemia, septic arthritis and meningitis. Almost all people are at risk however those with weakened immune systems are more prone.
