Symptoms, diagnosis and causes of peyronie's disease

Peyronie’s disease is a disorder in men characterised by the presence of small, hard but benign growths on the penis which may progress to scar formation. These penile scars may lead to subsequent bending of the shaft of the penis. Such lumps on the penis may resolve on their own in most of the cases.

Incidence, age and sex

Peyronie’s disease is a rare disorder which may affect men at any age. The incidence of this disease ranges form 1 to 4 % of men in the general population.

Signs and symptoms

The first clinical feature of the disease is generally exhibited as painful erections of the penis. Some individuals may also complain of abnormal bending of the penis, when erect. However slight bending of penis is a perfectly normal feature and should not be confused with the significant bending which is encountered in Peyronie’s disease. The affected individual may also experience problems during sexual intercourse due to penile pain or bending of penis.

A thorough physical examination by an urologist may lead to detection of lumps on upper and lower side of penis. The patient’s history along with physical examination is sufficient to diagnose the condition and no further tests are needed.

Causes and prevention

The exact cause of Peyronie’s disease is not known. However injury or trauma to the penis may pose as risk factors for formation of fibrous lumps on the penis. Sometime certain local infections may also predispose to this condition. Long-term consumption of anti-hypertensive medications like beta-blockers have also been known to cause Peyronie’s disease. There are no known preventive measures which may help in avoidance of the condition.

Complications

Peyronie’s disease is a disease which causes physical impairment and sexual and psychological repercussions. The affected individual may experience sexual difficulty and intense emotional distress.
