Chronic parotitis is a condition wherein there is chronic inflammation of the parotid glands. It could affect one or two of the parotid glands. Chronic parotitis means that the condition is recurrent and this causes discomfort and swelling of the glands. There is also a marked decrease in the flow of saliva which is needed to digest food. Chronic conditions could lead to significant damage to the nerve endings in the face and other muscles needed for facial expressions.
