Melioidosis is a rare bacterial condition caused by Burkholderia pseudomallei. This bacterium affects various organs causing abscesses and loss of function of the organ. A person could acquire melioidosis in infested soil and contaminated water sources. Symptoms could depend on the organ affected by melioidosis; it can affect the lungs, kidneys, liver, heart and circulatory system.
