Mastoiditis is a bacterial infection of the mastoid bone, which is located behind the ear. It is usually caused by a middle ear infection, which spreads into the air pockets around the mastoid bone. Symptoms are fever, swelling behind the ear, tenderness of the area, discharge from the ear that is creamy white in colour, headaches and temporary loss of hearing.
