Heart & Lung Assessment
Breathlessness during any activity should be investigated. Respiratory disease and dysfunctional breathing is a particular issue with athletes, especially exercise induced asthma. A cardiopulmonary exercise test measures the amount of air that you breathe while wearing a soft, comfortable facemask covering your mouth and nose. An ECG (electrocardiogram) will look at the rhythm and rate of your heart, a blood pressure cuff will measure your blood pressure throughout the test and a small peg on your finger will measure how much oxygen is in your blood. Unless breathing difficulties are caused by respiratory disease, a programme that combines breathing techniques, posture work and inspiratory muscle training can eliminate respiratory symptoms during exercise.
