Dilatation and curettage (D&C)
Dilatation and curettage, or D & C, is a surgical procedure performed to remove unwanted tissue from the lining of the uterus or the endometrium. It is an invasive procedure where a speculum is inserted into the cervix to widen the entry for a curette to enter and scrape the endometrium. This procedure is recommended post abortion, abnormal bleeding, abnormal growths in the endometrium (polyps) and cancer. It takes about 15 minutes to do a D & C, after which the patient may be able to go home.
