Asthma is a condition that affects the small airways (bronchioles) of the lungs manifesting as abnormal narrowing of the airways, which cause breathlessness, coughing, wheezing (whistling sound on expiring) and chest tightness. It usually runs in families. Infection, cold season, smoking, pollution, pollen grains, emotional stress can precipitate symptoms of asthma. It is diagnosed with the help of measuring lung capacity by a technique called spirometry. Commonly, inhalers, oral drugs, and avoidance of trigger factors are prescribed as a remedy.
