When it comes to hair restoration it can be pretty time consuming, you’ll have a lot of questions and you’ll take a lot of time researching. There are many different treatments and medications that can help with hair loss.

The most popular treatment is a hair transplant, and once you’ve decided on a hair transplant you’ll still need to decide what type of treatment. In this article, the Harley Street Hair Clinic in London looks at both FUE and FUT hair transplants to find the right treatment for you.

What is an FUE hair transplant?

Follicular unit extraction is the revolutionary modern technique of hair transplantation. More advanced than older methods of hair transplantation, FUE at the Harley Street Hair Clinic is completed by a highly experienced doctor. Hair follicles are taken from areas at the back and side of the scalp with the use of a specialised extraction tool before they are transplanted.

The follicles are then prepared under a microscope and transferred to the recipient are using a specialist tool. The doctor will puncture the scalp and insert the grafts at an angle and density to mimic natural hair growth. This procedure will result in the most natural and realistic look hair transplant possible.

What is an FUT hair transplant?

Follicular unit transplantation (FUT) is a slightly older hair restoration procedure. During this procedure hair from areas such as the back and sides of the scalp are transplanted to thinning areas, however, the process in which this is done is very different to FUE.

The patient is anesthetised and a strip of tissue is removed from the donor area. This strip is then prepared and cut into smaller individual follicular units ready to be transplanted. Tiny holes are then made in the scalp where the hair grafts are then carefully placed this is usually done by a team of nurses or healthcare assistants.

FUT hair transplants can result in large scaring at the back of the scalp. This is due to a large area of tissue being removed for the transplant.

What hair restoration treatment is for me?

When it comes to hair restoration it always comes down to personal preference to decide what treatment is best for you. However, FUE has recently become the procedure of choice by patients worldwide as older methods such as the strip method (FUT) have become out-dated.

FUE hair transplants take much less time to heal compared to FUT methods. This is because only individual follicles are removed leaving only small puncture wounds. The FUE transplant will leave you with almost no post surgical pain and has an average recovery time of less than 7 days, compared to FUT transplants, which can take much longer to heal.
