Hair loss is a topic that many of us will think about throughout our life. Hair loss is something that will affect most of us at one time or another and because of this a lot of people spend time worrying about it. The Harley Street Hair Clinic will be looking into different types of hair loss and if there is a cure for them.

What causes hair loss?

When they get asked ‘what causes hair loss?’ it’s quite a difficult question to answer – there are many different types of hair loss, which also means there are many different causes of hair loss and it can become quite difficult and confusing to work out exactly what is causing your hair loss.

Hair loss can happen for a number of different reasons including genes, hormones, stress and even ageing.

What are the different causes of hair loss?

There are many different causes of hair loss, some can be temporary, others permanent – with this in mind it is important to see a hair loss specialist or a doctor to ensure you know what is causing your hair loss – this will help when looking into potential treatments.

Some temporary causes of hair loss can include hormonal changes, for example – pregnancy. During pregnancy, your hormones will change and this can actually improve the appearance and thickness of your hair, and after pregnancy, when your hormones return to normal you can notice excessive hair loss. After time, your hormones will return to normal and your hair growth/loss will also return to normal – with no treatment needed.

Stress is a big cause of hair loss, however, the good news is – hair loss from stress is not permanent. When we put our body through stress, be it physical or mental stress we can stop the growth phase of the hair growth cycle. Stress can push the hair follicles into the resting phase, this stops the hair growth phase and the hair follicles can then lie dormant for around three months before eventually shedding. Once the stress stops the hair growth cycle will return to normal.

Causes of hair loss that are permanent could be caused through your genes or age, the most common cause of hair loss – male pattern baldness can affect up to 70% of men and 40% of women throughout their lifetime. This type of hair loss is caused as a result of hair follicles shrinking due to the effects of androgenic hormones, testosterone and dihydrotesterone (DHT). These hormones breakdown the growth cycle and over time shorten it. The shedding stage remains the same, meaning you lose hair faster than you can grow it – causing permanent hair loss.

Is there a cure to stop hair loss?

One question they’re always asked is ‘is there a cure to stop hair loss’. This is something that most people wish for – a cure for hair loss. There are many different products on the market that are sold in a bid to stop hair loss – such as Minoxidil and Finasteride. However, these medications can work to temporarily stop hair loss, however, once you stop taking the medication the hair loss will start up again.

At current, there is no cure for hair loss – there is no medication or treatment that can completely stop hair loss, however, there are treatments that can work to disguise hair loss.

What hair loss treatments are available?

At the Harley Street Hair Clinic, they offer two hair restoration treatments that can work towards the appearance of a natural full looking head of hair. They offer both FUE hair transplant as well as advanced tricho pigmentation.

Both treatments can help those with thinning and receding hair achieve the appearance of a full head of hair – take a look at their case studies to see how the treatments can transform the appearance.
