Health and safety risk assessments

RoSPA can help you meet your legal duty to carry out 'suitable and sufficient' health and safety risk assessments. Whether you'd like assistance with the key risk assessment foundation - spotting hazards, or want an on-site transport or noise assessment, they can help.

Hazard spotting

Identifying hazards is the first step towards completing 'suitable and sufficient' risk assessments.  An experienced and fully qualified RoSPA consultant will visit your premises and will work with you to conduct a thorough assessment of workplace safety hazards.  This will include identifying priorities, discussing controls and advising on reporting mechanisms.  This service therefore provides essential ground work to assist you in with your risk assessment.

Onsite workplace transport consultancy

RoSPA's consultancy services for onsite workplace transport include a tailored review, applying risk assessment and HSG65 principles.  The onsite workplace transport review is an independent review of vehicle movement and operations across a site. The RoSPA consultant will report back with an action plan of how working areas can be improved. 

Noise assessments

Noise assessments are offered by RoSPA's fully competent noise assessors (recognised by the Institute of Acoustics) to help ensure compliance in your workplace.  The consultant will visit your premises to determine noise exposures and will identify any noise hazards.  The noise assessment results will be set out in a written report and recommendations made with regard to the employers' duties under the Control of Noise at Work Regulations 2005.

Dust surveys

A RoSPA consultant will visit your premises in order to act as the 'competent person' required under CoSHH Regulations to assess workplace dust exposure levels. During the dust survey the consultant will use Casella CEL equipment to assess exposure levels for individuals and to carry out background monitoring. Following analysis they will report on exposure levels, legal compliance and suggested control measures.

Fire risk assessments

RoSPA's Fire Risk Assessment service has been designed with the advice of a senior fire professional specifically to help you comply, whilst also prioritising areas for future attention.  A RoSPA consultant will assess a broad range of risk factors and will use a numeric rating scale and 'traffic light system' combined with qualitative review to make clear the significance of any risks found. During consultation with the client, an initial action plan can also be developed.

Display Screen Equipment assessments

Display Screen Equipment assessments by RoSPA can assist organisations to comply with legislative and best practice requirements for the use of display screen equipment such as computers and their configuration and use. Their assistance ranges from an audit of computer workstations, development of suitable policies and procedures, to assessment of individual workstations and the training of computer users in correct working methods and posture.

Moving and handling: Manual handling

A RoSPA Consultant can carry out a comprehensive audit that will consider the current procedural arrangements for the management of manual handling risks benchmarked against current legislation and industry standards.  A comprehensive report will include a draft action plan of how current arrangements can be maximised. The RoSPA Consultant can assist in the implementation of the action plan and verify by audit that objectives have been achieved.

Moving and handling: Safer handling of people

Incorrect handling of people in the health sector is a major cause of serious and disabling injuries amongst health professionals. RoSPA's consultants can visit clients and assess the techniques and equipment being used, making suitable recommendations for improvement where appropriate for safer handling of people. They can also provide training to those tasked with such activities to help ensure that such injuries are avoided.

Lone working

A lone working risk assessment can help with identifying, avoiding or controlling risks.  Employers are legally required to ensure that they have appropriate arrangements in place to help lone workers identify, avoid or control the risks. RoSPA can assist by carrying out a comprehensive audit of the procedural arrangements for the management of lone working.  A comprehensive report will describe the current situation and a draft action plan will outline how current arrangements can be enhanced. If required, the RoSPA consultant can support the systematic implementation of the action plan.
