Dr Mathew McCauley: Clinical Psychologist, Dublin
Dr Mathew McCauley is a Consultant Clinical Psychologist at Blackrock Clinic. The practice specialises in outpatient adult mental health, with a focus on clinical psychology and behavioural medicine from a bio-psycho-social perspective of health and illness. He provides consultation, assessment, diagnosis and treatment of psychological problems, including the psychological aspects of physical health conditions.
Training and experience as a Clinical Psychologist
Following his secondary education at Blackrock College,
Dublin, Dr McCauley completed his undergraduate and post-graduate studies in
the US and UK. He received his doctoral degree in clinical psychology from the
University of Warwick. Dr McCauley completed a specialist doctoral residency in
military clinical psychology with the UK Ministry of Defence, based at the
Royal Centre for Defence Medicine and Royal Air Force Brize Norton. His doctoral
research resulted in an award for “scientific achievement and contribution to
the field of military psychology” from the American Psychological Association's
Society for Military Psychology.
Dr McCauley later undertook training in operational
and deployment mental health at the UK’s Defence School of Post-Graduate
Medical Studies and the Center for Deployment Psychology, Uniformed Services
University of the Health Sciences, USA. After qualifying as a credentialed
clinical psychologist within the US military, Dr McCauley spent six years as a
civilian consultant clinical psychologist with United States Air Force, working
with military personnel in support of overseas operations. During this time he
trained as a Behavioural Health Consultant and subsequently held specific
consultant positions in liaison psychiatry, aerospace medicine, primary care,
and operational mental health.
Dr McCauley is formerly an Adjunct
Associate Professor of Psychology with UMUC, where he taught post-graduate
psychology to US military personnel. He is now an Honorary Research Fellow in
Clinical Psychology, where he is actively involved in supervising doctoral
degree research, with a focus on military psychology and psychological trauma.

Dr McCauley has extensive training and experience in assessing, diagnosing, treating, and supporting persons’ with post-traumatic stress. He delivers therapies for the treatment of Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder, which are endorsed by both the US military and the National Institute for Health and Clinical Excellence.
Medico legal
Dr McCauley has completed British Psychological Society (BPS) approved training as an expert witness and he is listed on the BPS Directory of Expert Witnesses.
As a mental health subject matter expert with the United States Air Force, he completed hundreds of assessments concerning occupational health functioning, with rulings on duty restrictions, such as working with specific weapons systems, ability to deploy on operations, etc.
He is experienced in conducting fitness-for-duty occupational health
evaluations for military medical boards, suitability-for-duty rulings, and
