Mr Bernard Potluri MS, FRCS, Dip.Urol has been a Consultant Urologist at the Princess Alexandra Hospital, Essex since 1997. He obtained his MB BS in 1977 and a masters in general surgery in 1981. In 1989 he was elected Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons followed by a diploma in urology from the Institute of Urology and University College, London in 1991.
For several years, Mr Potluri worked as a surgeon with the Ministry of Health in Jamaica in the West Indies. He obtained urological skills in India, Jamaica, and further urology training in Scotland, as well as the Institute of Urology at the Middlesex Hospital, London. From 1996 to 1997 he was a consultant at Hairmyres and Monklands hospitals in Scotland.
Mr Potluri's areas of expertise include urological cancers, erectile dysfunction, one stop prostate assessment, one stop haematuria assessment, no scalpel vasectomy (NSV), and microsurgical vasectomy reversal.
He has special interests in the diagnosis and management of prostate cancer and is able to offer diagnosis of prostate conditions – including transrectal ultrasound, PSA profile, PCA-3 test, biopsy and brachytherapy. Mr Potluri obtained his brachytherapy training in Berlin in 2004 from Dr Henkel and Dr Kahman of 'Ambulantes Operationszentrum in Ullsteinhaus GmbH' who are one of the most experienced permanent Brachytherapy specialists in Europe.
Mr Potluri carries out between 30-40 vasectomy reversal operations each year. He is also visiting surgeon for a vasectomy reversal clinic in South East England.
He enjoys teaching junior doctors, nurses, and general practitioners. Since he was appointed to the Princess Alexandra Hospital, the urology department has been recognised as a specialist training centre in urology. Some of his trainees are now well established consultants in various institutions throughout the UK. Several of his GP trainees are now established local GPs offering excellent primary care services in urology.
As well as consultancy and training Mr Potluri has published several papers and given numerous presentations.
