Mr Asif Raza: Consultant Urologist and Urological Surgeon, London

Mr Asif Raza is a Consultant Urological Surgeon and kidney stone / kidney cancer specialist. 

Mr Asif Raza is a Urologist in London. He has a subspecialist interest in minimal access (keyhole) and kidney stone and laparoscopic surgery. He also offers open and keyhole surgery for kidney cancer.

He also manages general urology problems including prostate problems.

Mr Raza graduated from Glasgow University Medical School in 1991.  He trained as a specialist registrar in Urology on the East of Scotland Training Programme in Urology. He trained in Minimal Access Surgery / Endourology (keyhole surgery for kidney stones using laser and during part of this period he trained in Laparoscopic Renal Surgery (keyhole surgery for both benign and malignant kidney (cancer conditions).

He trained in the world renowned Scottish Lithotriptor (Stone) Centre in the Western General Hospital Edinburgh. He also trained in Ninewells Teaching Hospital (Dundee) again performing minimal access (keyhole) surgery during part of this period. Ninewells Hospital has close links with the Cuschieri Laparoscopic Training centre.

After completion of his registrar training he was appointed as a Consultant Urological Surgeon in Ealing Hospital (London) and Honorary Consultant at  Hammersmith Hospital NHS Trust (London). He also holds the post of Honorary Senior Lecturer (Imperial College Medical School, London).

He has published widely in the Urology literature and is on the medical foreign faculty of Liaquat University (Hyderabad) for his expertise in Endourology and keyhole kidney surgery.

He has been recognised in Who's Who in the World.

Medical diagnosis and management

Mr Raza offers a comprehensive diagnostic service for kidney stones including a full metabolic stone screen including blood and urine tests. Up to date imaging facilities including standard xrays, ultrasound, Spiral CT scanning, Nuclear Scan (Renogram), and MRI if required are readily available.

Shockwave Lithotripsy (ESWL)

Shockwave treatment is a non invasive treatment for stones. It is not appropriate for all stones and your specialist will advise you whether this therapy is appropriate for you.

Surgical management

Surgical management for kidney stones may be necessary in certain situations such as when medical therapy or shockwave therapy has failed. Surgery may also be necessary in emergency situations where there is a blockage to the kidney caused by a stone. Your specialist may have to insert a JJ stent (a small plastic tube which runs between the kidney and the bladder) to drain the kidney before performing the definitive surgical procedure. Surgical options include Ureteroscopy (Rigid / flexible), percutaneous nephrolithotomy (pcnl) or occasionally laparoscopic (keyhole) or open surgery.
