Expert treatment for sports injuries of the knee and lower limb in South West London

Performing more than 600 operations a year, Mr Adhikari is a highly experienced and innovative surgeon offering specialist treatment for sports injuries of the hip, knee, ankle and foot.  Trained in India and London, he is a founding member and Deputy Director of the South West London Elective Orthopaedic Centre (SWLEOC) and provides orthopaedic services to Crystal Palace FC and other smaller football clubs in South London.  His experience also extends to injuries sustained in rugby, athletics, skiing and contact sports.

Mr Adhikari is recognised nationally and internationally for his expertise and pioneering work in knee surgery.  Having carried out the first computer-guided joint replacement in the UK in 2002, he continues to be highly involved in the development of new systems and in training programmes for this cutting edge technique, both in the UK and abroad.  In addition, he is one of the few orthopaedic surgeons in the UK currently able to offer the latest cartilage transplantation procedure, a technique in whose development he has played an active role.

Articular cartilage transplantation in South West London

Articular cartilage is the tough, flexible tissue that lines the joint, allowing the surfaces to move smoothly over one another.  Traumatic damage to this cartilage in the knee is a common sports injury and, until recently, brought about the end of many a sporting career, due to the tissue's inability to repair itself.

Performed by Mr Adhikari, articular cartilage transplantation is an exciting new technique that is showing great promise in treating these distressing injuries.  A small sample of healthy cartilage tissue is removed from the knee joint in a keyhole procedure, and then grown on a special membrane in a laboratory to a size that will fit the defect that is being treated.  This cell-containing membrane is then secured to the defect with a biological glue in a second operation.  Early, non-controlled trials of articular cartilage transplantation in patients at 5-8 years have produced good to excellent outcomes in 75-90% of patients, and Mr Adhikari is an investigator in the latest European-wide study into the technique.
