Jeremy Fairbank: Consultant Spinal and Orthopaedic Surgeon, Oxford

Specialist in spine surgery especially the treatment of disorders of the spine such as fractures, tumours, infections, spinal deformities (scoliosis and kyphosis), degenerative spinal disorders (including sciatica and spinal stenosis) and surgical management of back and neck pain.

 

Professor Jeremy Fairbank was educated and trained at Cambridge University and St Thomas’ Hospital. He qualified MB.BChir from Cambridge University in 1972 and became a fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons of England in 1977. He obtained an M.D. for a thesis on the facet joint in back pain in 1982 awarded by Cambridge University.

 

Professor Fairbank’s training included two years as a Spinal Fellow in the Robert Jones and Agnes Hunt Orthopaedic Hospital in Oswestry. Here he did his work for his MD Thesis, and published the Oswestry Disability Index, which has become a worldwide standard for assessing back pain and the results of treatment.  This was followed by four years as a Senior Registrar in the St Bartholomew’s Hospital Training Programme, which included 6 months working in Dallas. In 1984 he was appointed Consultant Trauma and Orthopaedic Surgeon to the General Hospital and Royal Orthopaedic Hospital in Birmingham. In 1989 he moved to Oxford. He developed the spinal deformity service up to international standards, aided by Consultants Gavin Bowden and James Wilson-MacDonald.

Professor Fairbank is currently employed by the Nuffield Orthopaedic Centre and the Oxford Radcliffe Hospital as Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon with a special interest in spinal disorders. The vast majority of his work is devoted to treatment of disorders of spine, including fractures, tumours, infections, spinal deformities (scoliosis and kyphosis) and back pain. Professor Fairbank has been a Professor of Spinal Surgery since 2006. He is President-Elect of the British Scoliosis Society.

 

Professor Fairbank’s NHS base is the Nuffield Orthopaedic Centre NHS Trust, an internationally acclaimed centre for diagnosis and treatments of bone, joint and muscle conditions. 

 

Conditions and treatments

Professor Fairbank treats the full range of spinal problems including

  • Back and neck pain

  • Degenerative spinal disorders (including sciatica and spinal stenosis)

  • Spinal deformity

  • Spinal infections

  • Spinal trauma

  • Spinal tumours

 

He has expertise in all aspects of surgical management of back and neck pain including

  • Microdiscectomy

  • Decompressions (laminotomy and laminectomy)

  • Spinal fusions

  • All forms of spinal instrumentation

All appointments should be made via Professor Fairbank’s Practice Manager, Mrs Mandy O’Sullivan, whose contact details can be found below.  Professor Fairbank is available for private patient appointments as follows:-

 

  • Monday mornings at St Lukes Hospital where his office is based; and

  • At other times as required at either St Lukes or the Oxford Clinic
