Consultant Shoulder and Elbow Surgeon, Cardiff: Geoff Graham
Consultant Shoulder and Elbow Surgeon, Cardiff: Geoff Graham

An experienced and innovative Cardiff-based orthopaedic surgeon offering the latest techniques for the treatment of conditions affecting the shoulder and elbow, with a special expertise in sports injuries, rotator cuff tears and frozen shoulder.

Mr Geoff Graham is Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon at the University Hospital of Wales and Honorary Senior Lecturer in Sport and Exercise Medicine at The University of Wales Institute Cardiff.  He provides private treatment for shoulder and elbow problems at two of South Wales's leading private hospitals:

  • Vale Healthcare Cardiff Bay Clinic
  • Vale Healthcare The Vale Hospital, Hensol

A leading shoulder and elbow surgeon in Cardiff

With over 20 years' experience, Mr Graham runs a large and successful private practice treating people with shoulder and elbow problems from all walks of life.  He has a particular interest in sports injuries, working with a wide range of professional and elite sportsmen and women, including rugby players and National Hunt jockeys, however a large proportion of his patients are ordinary people with painful and disabling degenerative conditions, such as arthritis and frozen shoulder.

Mr Graham is a firm believer in a multidisciplinary approach to the management and treatment of shoulder and elbow problems.  He works closely with allied professionals at the Shoulder Clinic at Vale Healthcare, including radiologists and physiotherapists, to find the right treatment path for an individual, only resorting to surgery when conservative treatments have failed.  Where surgery is indicated, Mr Graham is skilled in the latest minimal access arthroscopic (keyhole) techniques, and has developed a number of innovative procedures.

Shoulder and elbow conditions treated by Mr Geoff Graham

Mr Graham offers expert diagnosis and treatment for all conditions affecting the shoulder and elbow, including:

  • Arthritis of the shoulder and elbow
  • Shoulder instability and dislocation
  • Rotator cuff tears
  • Acromioclavicular joint (ACJ) injuries
  • Frozen shoulder
  • Tennis elbow
  • Fractures of the scapula and elbow
  • Shoulder impingement
  • Glenoid labrum tear

Shoulder resurfacing in Cardiff

Mr Graham offers resurfacing for damaged and arthritic shoulders, a more conservative and less invasive alternative to total shoulder replacement.  The top of the humerus (arm bone) is covered with a wear-resistant metal cap made of cobalt chromium, leaving the rest of the natural tissue and bone in place.  The procedure can normally be performed through smaller incisions than total shoulder replacement, resulting in less postoperative pain and a quicker recovery.

Shoulder resurfacing can bring relief from pain for many years, however should a total replacement become necessary in the future, the fact that the humeral head has already been resurfaced should mean that the second operation can be performed in a less invasive manner also.

Expert rotator cuff repair

The ability to lift and rotate the upper arm is dependent on the rotator cuff, a group of tendons that connects the muscles of the shoulder to the bones.  These tendons can tear as a result of an injury or through degenerative wear and tear, resulting in a painful and weakened shoulder with a limited range of movement.  Small tears may be treated conservatively with physiotherapy and steroid injections, however complete tears do not have the capacity to heal and, in these cases, surgery is required to restore normal function to the arm.

Mr Graham is a specialist in rotator cuff repair, stitching the torn tendon back on to its attachment on the humerus either in a minimally invasive arthroscopic procedure, or if necessary in an open operation.
