The Breathe-Implant for the treatment of breathing problems
Situated in the area corresponding to the crease on each side of the nose, the nasal valve is the narrowest part of the nasal airway. On exertion, during exercise for example, the increased air pressure tends to cause the lateral nasal walls to collapse inwards, nearly closing off the airway, however in people with nasal wall collapse this valve closes off completely, producing the symptoms of a blocked nose and difficulty breathing.
The Breathe-Implant is a small 0.5mm thick triangular-shaped piece of titanium that is positioned between two layers of cartilage in the nose to hold the nasal valve area open. First performed in the UK in 2009 by Mr Fayad, the procedure is associated with significant and quantifiable improvements in breathing. Patients also report improvements to their sense of smell, a reduced incidence of headaches and a reduction in snoring.
