Assessment and treatment of child psychiatric disorders
As Medical Director Dr Westgarth meets with each new referral personally. He undertakes a full assessment and after listening carefully develops the best plan to help. No two assessments are the same but the following areas are explored:
-
Concerns and details about the problems
-
A full history is taken including screening for all mental illnesses, educational and social situation, details about early development, physical health problems and any family history of mental health difficulties
-
When necessary a physical examination may be undertaken – this examination is usually chaperoned by parents, is brief, non-invasive and painless. Most young people find it fun
-
Who else has tried to help, what else has been tried, and what are your goals?
Armed with this information Dr Westgarth will reach a diagnosis or explain if there are other ways of understanding the problem, and will propose a plan for treatment. He will let you know what choices there are and seek your preferences.
Dr Westgarth will discuss with you who is best placed within the Child Psychiatry UK team to offer you the most expert therapeutic help. He may undertake therapeutic work personally, or refer to other Child Psychiatry UK team members. If Dr Westgarth is not undertaking therapeutic work personally he will meet with you to review progress periodically, and refine the management plan as necessary.
