Dr Michael Rowlands is a Consultant Psychiatrist, who worked initially in the NHS since 1990, and opened his full time private psychiatry practice in 1995. He is particularly interested in work-related stress, anxiety, depression, bipolar disorder, alcohol and drug misuse.
Dr Michael Rowlands MB ChB FRCPsych attended the University of Birmingham UK and he subsequently trained at St George’s Hospital in London and the Medical College at St Bartholomew’s Hospital in London. He became a Consultant Psychiatrist in the Reigate/Redhill area looking after general psychiatric problems but with a specific interest in developing services for drugs and alcohol.
He has worked at various psychiatric hospitals within the Priory Group including the Priory Hospital Sturt, The Priory Hospital Woking and Farm Place where he was Medical Director. He is now Medical Director of Cygnet Hospital Godden Green.

Dr Rowlands’ style of treatment is to gain a full assessment as is possible and put together an individual treatment plan. Dr Rowlands has a network of therapists to whom he refers in the Surrey/Kent/Sussex area all of whom have different skill sets. It is important that the patient and the patient’s problems are appropriately treated with the appropriate type of therapy which includes cognitive behaviour therapy; mindfulness based cognitive therapy, EMDR (for trauma) as well as a full range of counselling.
Dr Rowlands is Medical Director of Cygnet Hospital Godden Green and the Hospital provides good intensive out-patient treatment on a daily basis. This can often be very helpful in understanding psychiatric conditions and with the help of others learn new skills to ensure a solid recovery without recurrence.
Dr Rowlands admits patients to Cygnet Hospital Godden Green in Sevenoaks, Kent, to help people with the more severe problems of depression and substance misuse problems if required.
Private psychiatric assessment
Assessments normally take one hour and Dr Rowlands welcomes information from patients in advance of the consultation by letter or email.
Dr Rowlands ensures that there is good communication between himself and the patient’s general practitioner – and a general practitioner’s referral letter is almost always required – and often Dr Rowlands will dictate the letters with the patient present so that it is fully accurate.
Dr Rowlands is also Medical Director of Nova Vida Recovery which is a stand alone 12-step abstinence based treatment centre based in Portugal. This provides a suitable environment for in patient recovery from addictive disorders.
