Consultant Neuropsychiatrist in Birmingham, West Midlands, specialising in the treatment of general neuropsychiatric disorders, autistic spectrum disorders including Asperger's syndrome, adult attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, chronic fatigue syndrome, post traumatic stress disorder, mood disorders, and psychosis.
Dr Kanu Achinivu MBBS, MSc, MRCPsych specialises in the neuropsychiatric assessment and treatment of adult patients with mental illness in the context of developmental disorders or acquired brain injury, some of whom may fall within the category of mental impairment.
He works as a Consultant Neuropsychiatrist in the NHS and is also lead Consultant Neuropsychiatrist with the Olive Carter Unit of Hunters Moor Neurorehabilitation Centre for the West Midlands - a 10 bedded neurobehavioural unit for adults with acquired brain injury and neuropsychiatric complications in the private sector.
Within the NHS he runs an adult neurodevelopmental disorders clinic which specialises in the assessment and treatment of adults with complex neurodevelopmental disorders such as autistic spectrum disorders (Asperger's syndrome) and attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). He also runs a chronic fatigue syndrome clinic.
Qualifications and training as a Consultant Neuropsychiatrist
Dr Achinivu qualified with Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS) from the College of Medicine, University of Nigeria in 1998. He also holds a Master of Science (MSc) Degree in Clinical Neuropsychiatry from the University of Birmingham.
During his higher specialist training in general adult psychiatry and the psychiatry of learning disability on the East Anglia Rotational Scheme, he trained in neurological rehabilitation at the Colman Centre for Specialist Rehabilitation Services in Norwich, brain injury rehabilitation at the Oliver Zangwill Centre for Neurorehabilitation in Cambridge, clinical neurophysiology, neurology (complex epilepsy clinics), community paediatrics, clinical genetics clinics at the Norfolk & Norwich University Hospital and clinical neuropsychiatry and adult ADHD clinics at Addenbrooke's Hospital in Cambridge.
Dr Achinivu also received extensive training in the assessment and management of autistic spectrum disorders from the Autism Research Centre based in Cambridge and the National Autistic Society Lorna Wing Centre for Autism in Bromley, Kent. He is trained in the use of the diagnostic interview for the social and communication disorders (DISCO) schedule and the autism diagnostic interview - revised (ADI-R) interview schedule.
Accreditations
After completing psychiatric training, Dr Achinivu qualified with two separate accreditations - Certificate of Completion of Specialist Training (CCSTs) in the Psychiatry of Learning Disability and General Adult Psychiatry in 2009.
